My name is LeNore Kerber and I am the proprietor of The Eye of the Needle. We specialize in alterations and custom sewing, particularly for special occasion dressing, but also for most general sewing needs. I started sewing when I begged my mom for my own machine at age 3. My mother didn’t want me using her machine, so she obliged and I started making clothes for my dolls and such. Thus, I learned basic stitching, pattern making, and draping on a very rudimentary scale. My mother finally let me use her machine and I started making clothes for myself too. In fact, I made many of the outfits I wore in Jr. High, including my winter ‘ski’ jacket, because we simply couldn’t afford such things. My best friend in college was in the Shakespeare Ensemble and they were always looking for costume help, so I got roped into that as well – not completely unwillingly! And when getting married later, I looked all over for styles of gowns I liked and just couldn’t find anything in my price range, so I made my own wedding gown and all my bridesmaids’ dresses.
Then I became an engineer and worked for 20 years in various engineering disciplines, but they all revolved around making things and fixing things that didn’t work. Problem solving and how things go together have always been my interests. As family life changed, my career directions did as well. I needed something more flexible for my family and more creative for my own sanity. That’s when I started The Eye of the Needle, and I haven’t looked back.
My engineering background works in very well with the skill set required for operating such a business. I understand how things go together, I can plan and execute a complex project, I enjoy figuring out how a fabric is made and how it will work for a specific application, patterns and pattern manipulation have become second nature. And I can see the basics of how a body is shaped (every body is shaped differently) and what will flatter that shape (and what will not!). I love helping clients solve fit problems and finding a look that works with their shape and style. My favorite part of this business is finding a solution that looks great and allows the client a sigh of relief, a screech of delight or even tears of joy.
I am a proud member of both the local Sewing Referral Network as well as the national Association of Sewing and Design Professionals. I serve on the boards of both organizations and am the VP of Membership for the ASDP. I teach sewing classes, am a 4H leader (clothing construction and creative sewing) and work with the High School Marching Band and Choirs to make alterations for their uniforms/costumes. I am also the principle costumer for Rocky Mountain Theater for Kids. My favorite projects include the redesign/updating of vintage clothing (including re-making wedding gowns from ancestral sources), costuming period and fantasy shows, and designing one-of-a-kind gowns for brides who want something special.
The Eye of the Needle offers alterations, custom sewing and design, vintage redesign and repair, custom embroidery design and stitching, zipper repair and replacement, classes and individual instruction, and referrals to any other kind of sewing-related specialty you can think of!
